Arts and crafts as a fun way to learn

I am currently in my second placement in a mainstream school. As part of my training to become a teacher I have to spend eight weeks in a mainstream school and then I'll be back in my special school where I'll stay. This school is incredibly beautiful, their resources are amazing and the whole places looks stunning with decorations, rooms adapted and personalised to different needs, children's work everywhere... it is really pretty. On one of the art lessons we have been doing we are learning about an artist that focuses on insects and learning how to draw and make our own sculptures.

I think that Art is a really important lesson. During the years I have been working with SEN I have been using Art as a way for them to express themselves in a way that is different from words or emotions that they might find tricky. I've always tried to connect different subjects in the week and work in Art things we've been learning in History, Literacy, Humanities, etc. Children love creating things and, although sometimes they might find it a bit hard and a slow process, they love the result and they remember concepts about what they are learning a lot easier.

Ahora mismo estoy en el segundo cole que no es de especial. Como parte de mi formación para ser profesora tengo que pasar ocho semanas en un colegio ordinario y luego volveré a mi colegio de especial donde me quedo. Este colegio es super bonito, los recursos que tienen son increíbles y todas las clases y pasillos son geniales llenos de decoraciones, habitaciones adaptadas y personalidades para diferentes necesidades, trabajos de los niños por todas partes... Es muy bonito. En una de las clases de arte que hemos estado haciendo hemos aprendido sobre una artista que se centra en insectos y hemos aprendido a dibujar y hacer nuestras propias esculturas de insectos. Creo que arte es una asignatura muy importante. En los años que he estado trabajando con niños de especial he usado arte como forma de que se puedan expresar de una forma que es diferente de las palabras o emociones que a veces les cuesta un poco. Siempre he intentado conectar diferentes asignaturas de la semana y trabajar en arte cosas que hemos aprendido en Historia, Lengua, Humanidades, etc. A los niños les encanta crear cosas y, aunque a veces les cueste hacerlo o sea un proceso lento, les encanta el resultado y pueden recordar conceptos de lo que están aprendiendo mucho más rápido.
